“The Test of Knowing God”
I John 2:1

I John 2:1 (KJV)
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate
(helper) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

I John 2:2 (KJV)

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

 “propitiation” Comes from the word “propitiate” meaning… To gain or regain the good will of a god or person.

How Do We Know That We Love God?

I John 2:3 (KJV)… And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

Do you Know God?

I John 2:4…He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Am I a Liar?

“…keepeth not his commandments”

Meaning…Does not have a habit of keeping the commandments. Does not struggle with it!

I John 2:5…But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

I John 2:6…He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Galatians 5:14 …For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

I John 2:7b…  The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

The beginning of what? The world? No, it is the beginning of Christ’s Work on earth.

I John 2:8…Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

Not a “new commandment” of John, but of Jesus Christ… “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

“Which “thing” is true”… Love for your neighbor, your brethren

What darkness is past? That they were to love the Jews only not the Gentiles.

What is the true light? Jesus Christ’s words… Love the brethren/thy neighbor

I John 2:9…He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.  He is what?   A liar

I John 2:10…He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
If you love your brother and sisters in Christ

I John 2:11…But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

Am I a liar?

Do I walk as Jesus walked?

Do I love the brethren?
