Jesus and His Father

“Jesus and His Father”
John 10:30

Introduction

  • This morning we celebrate Father’s Day in America and I believe the best example of what a father and son/daughter relationship should be is that of God and His Son Jesus Christ.

I. Jesus and His Father Are One

  • John 10:30… I and my Father are one.
  • They are in complete agreement and action towards the same goal.
  • Father and Son share the same compassion in preserving (saving) and protecting Jesus’ sheep.
  • When John wrote “… I and my Father are one.” He wrote that inspired of the Holy Spirit of God saying that the two are “in unity” in all that they do.
  • This is taught by the Father and Son all through the Bible (God’s Word)
  • Husband and wife are to be in unity – Jesus repeated the words of His father from Genesis 2:24 in Matthew 19:5…And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6) Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
  • The Church is to be in unity – David said in Psalm 133:1…Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
    – Paul reminds the church at Ephesus of unity in – Ephesians 4:3… Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4) There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5) One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6) One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
  • As David said…there is happiness in unity. If a couple is not united in all that they do, there is no happiness. If a church is not united in all that they do, there is no happiness.

II.  Jesus Depends on His Father

  • John 5:19a… Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do:
  • If we are God’s children, we should do as Jesus does… be a carbon copy of our Father.
  • Jesus depended upon His Father’s will in Luke 22:42…Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

III. Jesus is a Reflection of His Father

  • John 5:19b… for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
  • Did you get that? “what things soever” meaning that no matter what it is, they do the same.
  • Eat the same food, fast when they are supposed to, think exactly alike, behave righteously, etc. Everything is the same.
  • Can we say the same of us? Are we a reflection of the Father?
  • The reason WHY Jesus is a reflection of His Father is found in John 5:20…

IV.  Jesus Has Faith in His Father’s Love for Him

  • The reason you should follow someone (such as a good father) is because you have faith in them that they are doing the right thing and love you.
  • John 5:20 …For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may
     marvel.
  • Jesus did not have faith in His friends. He did not have faith in His relatives. He did not have faith in the world’s government. He had faith in His Father.

V. God (The Father) gives great responsibility to Jesus

  • John 5:22…For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
  • What will Jesus judge? How people honor the Father by honoring His Son.
  • John 5:23…That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
  • To honor someone is to do as they do. Be obedient to their wishes or commands.
  • Children Honor their father and mother by being obedient.
  • We honor God (our Father) by being obedient to His Son Jesus.

VI. Father and Son are not in competition

  • Where there is unity, there is no competition. There is no one who thinks they are better than others.
  • Competition is for show. It is prideful. It is ungodly.
  • There is nothing wrong in trying to be the best you can be. But there is something wrong with trying to be better than others for prideful reasons.
  • John 5:23…That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
  • Our world today is very competitive. Guys against the gals. Democrats against the Republicans. One race against another. This church against that church. Children against parents.

VII. Jesus Lives for His Father’s Will

  • John 5:30…I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
  • The entire time that Jesus was on this earth, he sought out to do His father’s will.
  • Remember when Jesus was just 13 years old preaching in the temple and His parents couldn’t find Jesus anywhere?
  • Luke 2:48…And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49) And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not (didn’t you know) that I must be about my Father’s business?
  • How many of us this morning are doing our Father’s business?
  • How many of you even have an idea of what the father wants you to do?
  • Most people are wandering around aimlessly trying to seek happiness, comfort, and purpose in everything but God.
  • This Father’s Day let us do as Jesus did for His Father.
  • Remember that Jesus’ Father is our Father also.
